BASIC MACROECONOMIC CONCEPTS AND GOALS
1. Macroeconomics is the study of the economy as a whole. It is concerned not with details — the price of cigarettes relative to the price of bread or the output of cars relative to the output of steel — but with the overall picture.
2. The distinction between microeconomics and macroeconomics is more than the difference between economics in the small and economics in the large, which the Greek prefixes micro- and macro- suggest. The purpose of the analysis is also different.
3. Microeconomics places the emphasis on a detailed understanding of particular markets. To achieve this amount of detail or magnification, many of the interactions with other markets are suppressed. In saying that a tax on cars reduces the equilibrium quantity of cars we ignore the question of what the government does with the tax revenue. If the government has to borrow less money, it is possible that interest rates and the exchange rate will fall and that improved international competitiveness of the country's car producers will actually increase the equilibrium output of cars in the country.
4. Macroeconomics is concerned with broad aggregates such as the total demand for goods by households or the total spending on machinery and buildings by firms. The main issues in macroeconomics are inflation, unemployment, output and growth.
5. Macroeconomic policy. Almost every day mass media refer to the problems of inflation, unemployment, recession. These issues are widely discussed. The government has a variety of measures through which it can try to affect the performance of the economy as a whole. It levies taxes, influences the money supply, interest rates, and exchange rate, and it sets targets for the output and prices of the nationalized industries.

Application Letter
Messrs Smith & White
89, Broomwood Road
Manchester WG 73 JF
U.K.
25 January, 2006
Dear Sir,
As soon as I saw your advertisement in today's Guardian for a foreign correspondent I felt it was just the kind of post for which I have the qualifications and for which I have been looking for some time. I was born of English parents in Paris and have spent several years in different parts of Germany. I speak and write both English and German fluently and also have a good working knowledge of Spanish.
I am thirty-two years old and married and for the past six years have been on the staff of Messrs. Williams & Co., London, EC2V4EE, with full responsibility for their foreign correspondence. The firm is not a large one and the amount of foreign correspondence is often not enough to keep me fully occupied in the kind of the work I really enjoy. It is for this reason that I wish to get a similar post with a larger firm, with more work of the kind for which I am well qualified and better prospects.
I enclose a copy of a testimonial from Messrs. Dickens & Wood of Southampton for whom I worked for two years in a similar post. Mr. Williams, the senior partner in my present firm has kindly agreed to my giving his name for reference. I hope I may be invited to call for an interview.
Yours faithfully,
James Morrison

Telephone Conversation
On a certain day Victor Smirnov, one of the participants of the group decided to telephone the English businessman with whom he had been doing business for some time. Before he left Moscow he had contacted Mr. Carroll and told him he would be in London soon. And they decided to meet in his London office.
Thus he telephoned Mr. Carroll to make an appointment for the next day.
Victor: My name is Smirnov. I'd like to speak to Mr. Carroll, please.
Voice: There is no one by name of Carroll. I'm afraid you have the wrong number. What number were you calling?
Victor: I was dialing 72990.
Voice: Oh, but this is 72991.
Victor: I'm sorry to have bothered you.
Voice: That's quite all right.
***
Secretary: Mr. Carroll's office here.
Victor: May I speak to Mr. Carroll, please?
Secretary: Who is calling, please?
Victor: My name is Smirnov. I came from Moscow a few days ago and I wanted to meet Mr. Carroll. We spoke about our meeting while I was still in Moscow.
Secretary: I'm sorry Mr. Carroll is busy now. He is in conference. How could he
contact you later?
Victor: I'm staying at the Ann Elizabeth House Hotel. My room number is 346. I'll be in at about six in the evening.
Secretary: Very good. He will contact you then.
***
Mr. Carroll: Victor, is that you? Good evening.
Smirnov: Good evening, Tony. I very glad to hear you.
Mr. Carroll: So am I. When shall we meet?
Smirnov: I have some free time tomorrow morning.
Mr. Carroll: Splendid. Let's make an appointment for ten.
Smirnov: It suits me all right.
Mr. Carroll: Then our driver will pick you up at the hotel at a quarter to ten. Our office is not far away.
Smirnov: I'll be happy to see you and discuss our enquiry then.
Mr. Carroll: Likewise. I'll be grateful if you could join me for lunch.
Smirnov: Thank you. I'll be glad to. See you tomorrow.

The Efficient Worker
A new survey of 1,000 people working in London has found that three in every four believe they work less efficiently in the afternoon. The main reasons for this are tiredness, boredom and hunger. The ‘siesta syndrome’ makes 14.00–16.00 the worst hours, while productivity is best at 12.00pm. More than half of the number of people interviewed said they made more mistakes in the afternoon!
It seems that people in Britain are taking less time for lunch – with the average being just 27 minutes. Only one in five people take their full lunch hour, with many people working straight through. An office worker in Barcelona, Spain, takes between 90 minutes and 2 hours for lunch. In another survey, one fifth of people said they had too much work to do – and were becoming ill as a result. Britons do sometimes work long hours, although not as long as in other parts of the world. In Hong Kong, the six day week is normal. Britons also spend longer than anyone else in Europe commuting – 49 minutes being average, compared to 47 in Germany, 37 in France and just 20 in Italy!
One work psychologist thinks the reason for the increase in work is that more people are being judged on their targets and results. ‘People who do not make money can be sacked!’ Another reason for increased workloads is a rise in e-mails! However, longer hours do not lead to more productivity. As one manager said, ‘we should encourage workers to take regular breaks and eat healthier food. If not – productivity suffers’.

Global Brands
Some companies’ logos and images are internationally famous. The latest ranking, by Interbrand, lists the 100 most valuable global brands. None is stronger than Coca Cola, named the world’s top brand for the fourth year in a row, beating Microsoft into second place. Over half the Top 100 are US firms – Finland’s Nokia at number 6 is the highest position by a non-US company.
Clear trends include Asia’s power as a car manufacturer, with Toyota entering the Top 10 at number 9, the highest Japanese company in the list, while Mercedes is the highest position from a German company. New entries include UPS, Google, Novartis and Zara, the Spanish fashion chain. The highest UK position is the HSBC at number 79.
There is no Visa or Wal-Mart in the list – the criteria for qualifying are tough. Brands must be worth at least $2.1 billion dollars, and most importantly, one third of the company’s income must come from outside its own domestic market. The fastest rising company on the list is South Korea’s Samsung in 19th position, which has recently focused on quality, design and innovation.
Traditional advertising is changing. In the past, global fame was largely due to billboards and the 30 second commercial. Product endorsement is still a powerful tool – with actress Uma Thurman promoting Luis Vuitton. Increasingly, advertising is integrated into entertainment, such as BMW’s series of short Internet videos. The Internet is playing a key role in helping companies like Google and Amazon reach a global market, without relying on traditional advertising methods. With international competition as fierce as ever, companies will have to keep coming up with ways to keep their brand a focus of consumer attention.

“The Institute Life, My Profession and Work”
Let me introduce myself. My name is Natalya Kuznetsova. I was born in Chelyabinsk on July 2, 1986. I finished secondary school and technical college here. After finishing the technical college I began to work as a sales agent at a small business company.

Our Institute was founded in 1975. It is a branch of the Moscow Academy of Labour and Social Relations, which has been training specialists since 1919. Our Institute has State Accreditation and is authorized to issue diplomas acknowledged as State diplomas.
The Institute has excellent facilities for learning. There are computers available for students to use on their own, in the library, multimedia and computer rooms. The library information system includes an online catalogue. It provides access to both remote and locally-mounted electronic resources. The Institute has a good reputation for academic achievement and innovation.
The Institute newspaper “Studenchesky Vestnik” covers a diverse range of questions: learning experience, students’ research, special interests, etc.
The Institute trains specialists in the Economics of Labour; Accounting, Analysis and Auditing; Management of Organization; Finance and Credit; Applied Information Science (in Economics). There are different forms of tuition: full-time, part-time studies, tuition by correspondence. I study at the correspondence department.
My future speciality is Accounting, Analysis and Auditing. We study such subjects as Economic Theory; Regional Economy; World Economics; Money, Credit, Banks; Mathematics; Information Science; English; Philosophy; Psychology; History of Russia; Physical Training and a lot of other subjects.
Of course it is difficult to combine work and studies but my objective is to develop a career in economics and business so I will try to overcome these difficulties and become a highly skilled, knowledgeable and qualified specialist in future.
